DART Rate Calculator & Formula
POR Equipe editorial RiskoPilot · REVISADO EM 2026-07-11
The DART rate (Days Away, Restricted or Transferred) is calculated as (DART incidents × 200,000) ÷ total hours worked. It counts recordable incidents that caused missed days, restricted duty, or job transfer — a stricter subset of TRIR. US private-industry average DART is 1.7 (BLS 2022). DART is often the more useful of the two because it filters out the very-minor cases that inflate TRIR.

What qualifies as a DART case?
A DART case is any OSHA-recordable that resulted in at least one of: (1) one or more days away from work beyond the day of injury, (2) restricted work assignment, or (3) job transfer. First-aid-only cases and medical-treatment-only cases (without lost time or restriction) count in TRIR but not DART.
DART vs TRIR — which tells you more?
TRIR is broader and can be inflated by minor cases (a cut requiring stitches counts). DART is stricter and correlates better with lost productive capacity. If your TRIR is high but DART is low, most of your recordables are minor — a lagging-indicator sign of good triage. If DART is high, your severity mix is genuinely bad. Report both; act on DART.
